What’s up guys! Ryan here from ActuallyUsed. Today, I’m taking the flagship models from two of the top brands in the robotic pool industry and going head-to-head. I’m going to show you everything you need to know before deciding between the two of these robots – from my testing where I hooked up my manometer to the suction ports of each robot to measure the suction power at the intakes to what it is like to live with each. And by the end, you’ll know which one I’d choose between the two.

Now, these two robots are fundamentally different robots. And the ownership experience you get with each shows the full story. One is cordless. One is corded. One requires daily recharging. One turns on every day automatically.

I’ve been testing both of these robots for a while now, and let me tell you – the difference between the two is night and day. With the Premier having about 50% stronger suction than the Aiper in my manometer testing, these are two completely different robots – yet are around the same price. But there’s a lot more to unpack here, so let’s dive in.

Why the Dolphin Premier Stands Out

After testing over a dozen pool robots, I have to say – the Premier is one of my favorites. Why? It’s the strongest pool robot I’ve tested by a large margin. At over 2.2 PSI of suction, it vacuums like a pro. A lot of pool robots on the market are cheap builds that cut corners with weak motors or poor build quality. The Premier is different. It is built on the commercial-platform with two commercial-grade DC motors. So, you’re getting the same motors that are in robots used in high-end aquatic centers and pools – which is really cool.

But let’s get back to the suction power really fast. When I measured suction power with my manometer, the Premier pulled about 2.2 PSI at the intake – the highest I’ve ever recorded on a pool robot. Compare that to the Aiper Scuba X1 Pro Max, which only managed around 1.4 PSI. That’s over 50% less suction for the same price based on my testing.

Filtration – A Game Changer

Most pool robots have one basic mesh filter. The Premier comes with three options in the box:

  • Oversized Leaf Bag – for heavy leaf loads
  • NanoFilters – ultra-fine cartridges that catch microscopic particles
  • Standard Mesh Panels – for everyday cleaning

This flexibility is huge. During fall, throw in the leaf bag. Want crystal-clear water? Pop in the NanoFilters. Most cordless robots can’t even use ultra-fine filters because their motors aren’t strong enough to push water through them. The Premier’s commercial-grade motors handle them without breaking a sweat.

The Pro Max has what Aiper calls an “ultrafine filter” – but it isn’t quite the same as NanoFilters. It is really just a cloth insert that goes in the basket. It’s a little more cotton-like than the NanoFilters. Nothing like Dolphin’s pleated NanoFilters with the deep ridges and larger surface area. After cleaning, we noticed the Premier left the water a little more polished.

And here’s the thing – the debris basket itself is on the smaller side too. Compared to the Dolphin Quantum with its XXL MaxBin, you’ll immediately notice the difference. The Aiper’s basket fills up faster since it is smaller, which means you’re emptying it more often. For a flagship robot at this price, the filtration feels like an afterthought in my opinion.

Automation – Set It and Forget It vs Daily Babysitting

This is where it really gets interesting.

The Dolphin Premier has a Weekly Smart Timer. You set it once, and it automatically turns on and cleans every day. I pressed the button, walked away, and only came back at the end of the week to rinse the filter. That’s it.

Now here’s what owning the Aiper Pro Max looks like:

  1. Run a cleaning cycle
  2. Fish it out of the pool (more on the weight later…)
  3. Carry a dripping, 30-plus-pound robot to the charger
  4. Wait 4-5 hours for it to charge
  5. Lug it back to the pool
  6. Repeat tomorrow

That’s two trips a day just to clean your pool once. After a week, I was doing this 14 times. With the Premier? One interaction per week to clean the filter. The difference is night and day.

And here’s the kicker – if you forget to charge the Aiper, your pool doesn’t get cleaned.

Corded vs Cordless – The Real Story

There’s so much marketing hype around cordless pool robots right now. They look clean in ads with no cable. But after testing both extensively, corded wins every time. Here’s why:

Consistent Power: The Premier maintains full 2.2 PSI suction throughout the entire 2.5-hour cleaning cycle.

Longer Cycles: Most cordless robots run 60-90 minutes before needing a charge. The Premier runs 2.5 hours straight. More cleaning time means a more thorough clean.

No Tangling Issues: “But what about the cord tangling?” The Premier has a 60-foot anti-tangle swivel cable. In weeks of testing, I had zero tangling issues. Maytronics solved the cord problem through this engineering instead of just removing the cord entirely.

The Aiper Pro Max – Looks Amazing, Falls Short

I’ll give Aiper credit – the Scuba X1 Pro Max looks incredible. Sleek black body, carbon fiber accents, futuristic LED indicators. Unboxing it felt like getting a premium piece of tech. And on paper, the specs are wild: 9 motors, 40 sensors, 8,500 GPH water flow, up to 5 hours runtime.

But here’s the reality:

That “up to 5 hours” is only in Eco mode. Run it in normal mode and you’re looking at closer to 3 hours.

That 8,500 GPH flow rate doesn’t translate to actual suction power. My manometer test showed only 1.4 PSI at the intake. All that water movement, but weaker vacuum pull where it matters in my testing.

The App Problem: Aiper makes a big deal about smart app control. The app interface looks great… but it only works when the robot is out of the water OR skimming the surface. The second it goes underwater, the Wi-Fi connection dies. Want to stop a cycle or steer it to a specific spot? You have to physically pull it out first.

Aiper’s solution? Sell you an add-on. The HydroComm Pro module is sold separately and costs a few hundred dollars. So after spending $1,500 on the robot, you need another couple hundred dollars just to get the “smart” features to work. That rubbed me the wrong way.

The Weight Issue

This thing is an absolute tank. The Pro Max weighs around 30 pounds dry. Pull it out of the pool waterlogged and you’re dealing with probably around 30 to 35 pounds. I’ve had to wrestle it out using their little plastic hook on a pool pole, and it felt like the hook was about to snap every time.

The Dolphin Premier? About 20 pounds with a quick-drain design so water empties out as you lift. And to get it out, you just gently tug on the cord to get the robot to the surface. Night and day difference in handling.

Safety Concerns

I have to mention this because it was on my mind the entire time I tested the Aiper.

According to U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recall notices, Aiper has had two major recalls fin the last couple years for fire hazards:

  • 2023: About 22,000 Aiper Elite Pro units recalled for battery overheating risks
  • 2025: Around 35,000 Aiper Seagull Pro units recalled after 19 reports of smoking, melting, or catching fire while charging

It is important to mention the Aiper X1 Pro Max is not a unit affected by this recall. Personally, knowing that history made me cautious when charging it still though. I never left it charging unattended. I actually ended up charging it outdoors on concrete away from anything flammable, just in case.

Value – What Are You Actually Paying For?

Let’s break this down:

Aiper Scuba X1 Pro Max is Around $1500 and with that you get:

  • Cordless convenience (with daily charging hassle)
  • Weaker suction (1.4 PSI)
  • Lackluster filtration
  • App that only works out of water or on the surface

Dolphin Premier is around the same price at $1500 and you get:

  • 2.2 PSI suction (highest I’ve tested)
  • Multi-media filtration including NanoFilters, a Leaf Bag, and standard filter set
  • Weekly timer automation

For the same amount of money, the Premier delivers more power, better filtration, true automation, and peace of mind. The Aiper charges a premium mainly for being cordless – but that “convenience” actually creates more work.

Better Alternatives

If you’re shopping around here are some other robots I’d also look at:

Dolphin Sigma – If you want app control, this is the one. Triple motors, gyroscope navigation, and an app that actually works underwater. Around $1,800 with 2.0 PSI suction.

Dolphin Quantum – It’s a little more budget-friendly. Huge XXL MaxBin filter, NanoFilters included, and a weekly scheduler. And pulls 1.5 PSI, which is still more than the Aiper X1 Pro Max.

Final Thoughts

I really wanted to love the Aiper Pro Max. The idea of a truly cordless, high-performance pool robot sounds incredible. But the execution just isn’t there yet. It looks amazing, but it asked a lot from me – daily attention, tolerance for quirks, and trust in an battery system. And it gave back too little in actual cleaning performance.

The Dolphin Premier? It just quietly gets the job done, day after day, without me thinking about it. That’s what a pool robot should do.

Until cordless technology improves to match corded power and reliability, I’m sticking with corded robots. They might not be as flashy, but they work. And that’s what matters.
