Because on paper, Aiper wants you to believe the answer is obvious. More motors, smarter nav, longer battery, wireless charging dock — the spec sheet looks like a clean upgrade.

I’ve been running both of these robots in my test pool, measuring real suction pressure at the intake port with a hydro manometer — PSI pulling force, not GPH numbers from the spec sheets. And what I found was… not exactly what Aiper’s upgrade story would suggest.

Let’s get into it.

What You’re Actually Paying For

The X1 Pro runs around $1,299. The Pro Max is sitting at $1,799. That’s the gap we’re working with.

Spec-wise, the Pro runs 4 motors, 26 sensors, FlexiPath 1.0 navigation, and claims 6,600 GPH. Battery is a 10,400mAh pack at 21.6V — up to 3 hours of runtime, 5-hour charge, and it’s rated for pools up to 2,150 square feet.

The Pro Max steps it up: 9 motors, 40 sensors, FlexiPath 2.0, and claims 8,500 GPH. Same 10,400mAh capacity but at 25.2V. Rated runtime stretches to up to 5 hours for floor cleaning, or up to 10 hours for surface skimming. Charge time drops to 4 hours, and it ships with a wireless charging dock. It also adds surface skimming and better slope coverage, and the pool rating jumps to 3,200 square feet.

On paper — Pro Max wins everything. But is it worth it? How’d it perform in my test? And should you really settle for a cordless pool robot?

Suction — The Manometer Numbers

Alright, here’s the part you came for.

I tested both robots under consistent conditions with a hydro manometer measuring actual PSI at the intake port. Here’s what I found in my testing:

A few things here worth unpacking.

The Pro Max does come out on top within this lineup in my testing — 1.3 PSI versus 1.0 PSI on the Pro. That’s a real, measurable difference. But look at the Pro versus the base X1. The Pro actually tested lower in my testing — 1.0 PSI against the base model’s 1.2 PSI. That’s not what you’d expect from a model positioned as an upgrade, and it’s something I want to be upfront about.

My theory on the Pro Max’s stronger showing? Look at the port geometry. The Pro Max runs a narrower but taller intake — 6.125" wide by 1.5" tall — which in my experience concentrates the suction more effectively than the Pro’s wider, shallower 7.75" by 1.0" opening. That geometry difference likely plays a role in the pressure reading, even with the same battery capacity across both units.

As for why the Pro might trail the base X1 in my testing — my speculation is that there’s a “tech tax” at play. More sensors, more processing, more features all pulling from the same power budget. That’s just my theory based on what I observed, but the data is what it is.

Now here’s the context that really matters. In my testing, the Dolphin Premier — a corded robot — hit 2.2 PSI. The Dolphin Sigma was similarly well ahead of both of these Aiper units. That means the Pro Max, Aiper’s flagship at $1,799, measured under 60% of the suction I recorded on the Premier in my testing.

That’s not a rounding error. Suction is what actually lifts debris off your pool floor. In my experience, that difference shows up in water clarity after a cleaning cycle — you can see it.

The Automation Problem — Do the Math

Here’s something most buyers don’t think through before pulling the trigger on a cordless robot, and it’s the thing that sticks with me most after using both of these.

The Pro gives you roughly 3 hours of runtime before you pull it out for a 5-hour charge. The Pro Max stretches to 5 hours of floor cleaning and a faster 4-hour charge via the wireless dock. So yeah — the Pro Max is genuinely better here. No fumbling with a plug on a dripping wet robot is a real quality-of-life win.

But either way, you are pulling this machine out of your pool every single day. That’s a 33-pound robot on the Pro Max — wet. You carry it to the dock, wait hours for the charge, put it back in. Minimum two meaningful interactions per day. Fourteen a week. Every week, indefinitely.

Compare that to a corded robot with a built-in weekly timer — like the Dolphin Premier or Sigma. You set the schedule once. It turns itself on, runs its cycle, shuts off. In my experience, my one weekly interaction is emptying the filter basket. That’s it. You’re getting up to 21 hours of cleaning time a week without touching the thing.

That’s not a minor convenience gap. That’s the difference between a robot that works for you and one that creates a new daily chore. And in my experience with both these Aiper units, the novelty wears off faster than you’d think. Then you’re just left with the routine.

Filtration

Both the Pro and Pro Max use top-loading debris baskets with what Aiper calls MicroMesh Ultra-fine filter inserts. The design is clean — pop the lid, rinse the filter, done. Maintenance is easy, and I’ll give them credit for that.

That said, in my testing, the mesh media handles the big stuff well — leaves, bugs, anything chunky. Where I noticed it fall short was on fine particles: pollen, silt, fine dust. After a full cycle with either model, the pool looked noticeably cleaner, but I didn’t get that polished water result I’ve seen from robots with more advanced filtration systems.

The Dolphin Premier’s MultiMedia setup — which supports NanoFilters, standard cartridges, and oversized leaf bags — is in a different class in my experience. The NanoFilters are pleated and dense, and the water clarity difference after one cycle was visible in my side-by-side testing.

The Pro Max’s basket is slightly larger than the Pro’s, but not by a margin that made a meaningful difference in my experience. If you’re in a pollen-heavy environment or have a lot of fine debris — and if you do, you know it — neither of these robots is going to match what a corded unit with genuine ultrafine filtration can do.

App and Smart Features

The Aiper app is actually well-designed — battery status, mode selection, cycle monitoring, clean interface. As long as the robot is out of the water it works great. But the second it goes underwater? It doesn’t work at all.

The problem is that Wi-Fi doesn’t travel through water. Once either robot is in the pool and cleaning, the app connection drops. You’re not steering it, you’re not adjusting anything, you’re not monitoring progress. The app is essentially a pre-launch control panel.

Aiper does offer the HydroComm Pro module as a separate add-on for underwater connectivity, but that’s extra cost on top of robots already sitting at $1,299 and $1,799. I’d verify current availability before factoring that into your decision. For what it costs, in my opinion, it should have included the HydroComm.

Weight and Daily Handling

The Pro weighs around 26 pounds dry. The Pro Max is roughly 33 pounds dry — and add water weight when you’re pulling it out and it’s a real effort every day. Both include a hook for a standard pool pole, which helps.

The wireless dock on the Pro Max is an improvement — I want to be fair about that. But you’re still hauling 33 pounds of wet robot out of the pool every day, and in my experience, that gets old regardless of how easy the dock makes the next part.

So Which One Should You Buy?

If you’ve already decided cordless is what you want — and you’re choosing between these two specifically — the Pro Max is the call. In my testing it measured higher PSI, it has meaningfully longer runtime, faster charging, the wireless dock, better navigation, and handles a larger pool. The $500 does buy you real improvements within this lineup.

The Pro, though — I want to be straight with you — actually tested lower in suction than the base X1 in my tests. It’s not a clean upgrade in every dimension based on what I found, and I think that’s worth knowing before you spend $1,299.

The Bigger Picture

I’m always going to be straight with you guys, so here’s where I land after testing both of these: the cordless category still has a ceiling that these price points haven’t cleared — at least not in my testing.

The Dolphin Premier measured 2.2 PSI in my testing — that’s a lot more suction than the Pro Max and more than double the Pro. The Sigma is in the same range. Both run on weekly timers with zero daily interaction or recharging required. Their NanoFilter systems deliver better water clarity in my experience. And they cost the same or less than the Pro Max.

So before you decide which Aiper to buy, I’d encourage you to decide whether cordless is actually the right category for your situation. Because that question matters more than the Pro versus Pro Max comparison.

If true automation, real suction, and best-in-class filtration are your priorities — in my experience, the corded robots deliver more of all three. The interaction math alone is something every buyer should think through before committing.

If cordless flexibility matters for your specific setup and you understand what day-to-day ownership looks like — go Pro Max. It’s the better product between these two, and the improvements are real. Just go in with clear expectations.
