Hey guys, Ryan here from ActuallyUsed. Today we’re putting two of Aiper’s cordless robots head to head — the Aiper Scuba X1 and the Aiper Scuba X1 Pro Max. If you’re not familiar with Aiper, this is the base model vs their top tier X-series model.

The X1 runs around $800 to $1,000. The Pro Max pushes up to $1,800. That’s a big gap in price for two robots that, on paper at least, look like they’re doing the same job. So, are either of these robots worth it?

I’ve used both in our test pool, and I measured suction power directly at the intake port using a manometer. That’s the same way I test every robot that comes through here — no manufacturer specs, no marketing numbers, just actual PSI number I’ve measured in our pool.

So let’s get into it.

Price

The X1 sits around $800–$1,000 depending on where you buy it and when. The Pro Max is right around $1,700–$1,800. For reference, there’s also a middle option — the X1 Pro — that lands somewhere between the two, around $1,200–$1,400. Today’s focus is on the two endpoints: the base X1 and the top-of-line Pro Max. I’ll reference the Pro where it’s relevant, but if you’re trying to decide between those two, this is the video for you.

Build Quality and Design

Both robots look great, I’ll give Aiper that. Glossy black body, carbon-fiber-style accents — they have a premium aesthetic that matches the price tags.

The most notable physical difference between the X1 and Pro Max is weight. The X1 comes in around 25 pounds dry. The Pro Max is closer to 33 pounds. That doesn’t sound like a lot until you remember that with a cordless robot, you’re pulling it out of the pool every single day to recharge it.

At 33 pounds, especially after it’s been in the water, that becomes a real workout. Both include a plastic hook for attaching to your pool pole, but at Pro Max weight, that hook takes some stress. If you have any back issues, the daily pull-out routine on the Pro Max is something you should factor into your buying decision.

Suction Power — The PSI Numbers

This is what I care most about, and it’s where I want to spend some real time because the data tells an interesting story.

Now note that all of this was measured in our pool and your experience may vary. All PSI measurements were taken in the same test pool using the same method for consistency, but real-world performance may vary depending on pool conditions, debris type, and maintenance.

The Pro Max edges out the X1 at the top — 1.3 PSI versus 1.2 PSI in my testing. That’s a real difference, but it’s a small one. What’s more interesting is the middle option: the X1 Pro actually measured lowest of the three at 1.0 PSI, despite sitting between them in price. Worth keeping in mind if you were considering the Pro as a value play — in my testing, it’s actually the weakest of the three on raw suction.

The Pro Max achieves its slightly higher PSI through a redesigned intake port — narrower and taller (6.125" wide by 1.5" tall) compared to the wider, flatter ports on the X1 and Pro. A taller, narrower port can concentrate suction pressure even if the motor output is similar, which explains the gap.

Now let’s put these numbers in context. In my testing, the Dolphin Premier measured 2.2 PSI at the intake. The Dolphin Sigma came in similarly strong. The best cordless result I got across the entire Aiper Scuba X1 lineup was 1.3 PSI on the Pro Max — roughly 60% of what the Premier delivered. That gap doesn’t close during a cleaning cycle either; corded robots draw consistent power throughout the entire run. In my experience, battery-powered units can lose some performance as the charge depletes over a cycle.

So yes — the Pro Max is the stronger of the two robots we’re comparing today. But stronger within this cordless lineup still puts both robots well behind what corded cleaners delivered in my testing.

Battery Life and the Recharging Routine

This is the part of the ownership experience that matters most in day-to-day life, and it’s the same story with both robots.

The X1 runs a 7,800mAh battery — about 3 hours of runtime with roughly a 4-hour recharge. The Pro Max steps up to a 10,400mAh battery with up to 5 hours in Eco mode. But Eco mode is the lightest cleaning setting. Switch to the full floor, wall, and waterline mode — which is the whole point of buying a premium robot — and that runtime drops to around 3.5 hours on the Pro Max.

Here’s what the ownership math actually looks like. With either of these robots, your week goes something like this: drop it in, wait for it to finish, pull it out, empty the filter basket, carry it to the charger, wait hours, put it back. Every day. In my experience, that’s around 14 separate interactions per week just to keep your pool clean.

Compare that to a corded robot with a weekly timer. You drop it in once, set the schedule, and the robot handles the rest. It runs automatically, shuts itself off, and you empty the basket once a week. One interaction. That’s the automation gap between cordless and corded — and in my experience, it’s the most underappreciated difference in this category.

Neither the X1 nor the Pro Max changes this equation. The Pro Max has a bigger battery, which does help on coverage, but both robots still require daily charging and daily retrieval.

Filtration

Both the X1 and the Pro Max use mesh and cotton-style filter screens. The Pro Max does have a physically larger filter basket, which is an improvement — more capacity means less frequent emptying. But the filtration media itself is the same category of technology across both models.

What I look for in filtration is the ability to capture fine silt, pollen, and that ultra-fine powder-like debris that makes pool water look slightly hazy even after a cleaning cycle. In my testing, I noticed that finer debris like silt and pollen didn’t get captured as effectively as I would’ve liked.

The robots I compare these against — the Dolphin Premier and Sigma — use NanoFilter technology: deep-pleated cartridge filters that capture debris down to a much finer particle size. The difference in water clarity after a cleaning cycle is visible. If water clarity is important to you, that filtration gap is real and worth factoring into your decision.

For the X1 vs Pro Max specifically: the Pro Max’s larger basket is a meaningful upgrade if you’re dealing with heavy debris loads. But neither robot’s filtration matches what you get with NanoFilter-equipped corded robots at similar price points.

App and Smart Features

Both robots connect to Aiper’s app, and the interface is clean — battery status, mode selection, cleaning history. It’s well designed. But there is a big catch.

App connectivity only works when the robot is out of the water. Once it’s submerged, the Wi-Fi signal drops and you lose all control. To get underwater app connectivity and remote steering, Aiper sells the HydroComm Pro module as a separate accessory — and it’s not cheap.

The corded robots I’d recommend at these price points include underwater app control right out of the box. The MyDolphin Plus app on the Sigma, for example, works while the robot is cleaning, lets you steer it remotely, and handles full scheduling — no add-on required. Locking that functionality behind a separate purchase is a tough sell at $1,000–$1,800.

The X1 uses ultrasonic sensors and a built-in camera for pool mapping. The Pro Max takes this further with 40 sensors and 9 dedicated motors for navigation. On paper, that’s impressive hardware.

In practice, the Pro Max does navigate more consistently than the base X1. It climbs walls more reliably, covers the waterline, and moves with more intention than random-bounce budget units. The X1 is decent, but the Pro Max is the better navigator of the two.

That said, when you switch the Pro Max into full cleaning mode — floor, walls, and waterline — the runtime drops by over an hour compared to floor-only mode. So you get better navigation at the cost of battery life. It’s a tradeoff the X1 doesn’t force quite as sharply, simply because it covers less ground to begin with.

At the price points we’re talking about, the navigation competition includes the Dolphin Sigma, which uses a built-in gyroscope for precise, repeatable pool mapping. The Sigma doesn’t have battery constraints — it navigates at full power for the entire cycle, every time.

Safety Note

This is worth mentioning briefly. Aiper has had two CPSC-documented product recalls — 22,000 Elite Pro units in 2023 and 35,000 Seagull Pro units— both related to battery and charging issues.

The X1 and Pro Max models have not been part of those recalls, and I did not experience any safety issues during testing. As with any lithium-ion device, it’s important to follow all manufacturer charging and safety guidelines.

X1 vs Pro Max — Which One Wins?

If you’re choosing strictly between these two: the Pro Max is the better robot. It has stronger measured suction in my testing (1.3 PSI vs 1.2 PSI), a significantly larger battery, a bigger filter basket, and better navigation hardware. If Aiper’s cordless lineup is your pool cleaner category and you have the budget, the Pro Max is the one to get.

The X1’s advantages are real but modest: it’s lighter (which matters for daily hauling), it’s $700–$800 cheaper, and it’s simpler to manage day to day. If budget is the primary constraint and you’re set on cordless, the X1 is serviceable.

But both robots share the same core limitations: daily recharging, suction that doesn’t match corded alternatives in my testing, filtration that falls short of NanoFilter performance, and app connectivity that requires an extra purchase to work underwater.

The Pro Max wins the head-to-head. It’s not a runaway win — 1.3 PSI vs 1.2 PSI is a modest gap — but it’s the better robot at every measurable point.

What I’d Recommend Instead

I want to be straightforward about this. If you’re spending $1,000 to $1,800 on a pool robot, there are corded alternatives that deliver more suction, better filtration, and true automation — and they cost the same or less.

Here’s what I’d point you toward based on my testing:

Dolphin Premier — Best Overall

The Premier is the robot I keep coming back to as my benchmark. In my testing it measured 2.2 PSI — significantly stronger than either Aiper in this comparison. It uses Dolphin’s Multi-Media filtration system including NanoFilters, has a weekly Smart Timer built in, cleans walls and waterline, and carries a 3-year warranty. You set the schedule once, empty the basket once a week, and that’s your interaction with the robot. No daily charging, no daily retrieval.

Dolphin Sigma — Best for Tech Features

If you like the idea of app control and smart navigation — which clearly attracted you to the Aiper lineup — the Sigma delivers all of that and more without the battery limitations. Triple commercial-grade motors, a built-in gyroscope, NanoFilters, and the MyDolphin Plus app that works while the robot is underwater. Underwater remote steering, scheduling, and monitoring are all included. No add-on module required.

Dolphin Quantum — Best Value

If budget is a factor, the Quantum gives you NanoFiltration, weekly timer automation, and an XXL debris bin that holds significantly more than either Aiper model — typically at a price that’s hundreds less than the Pro Max. Strong wall and waterline coverage, consistent suction from a direct electrical connection. In my testing it’s a strong performer for the money.

Final Verdict

Between the Aiper Scuba X1 and the Aiper Scuba X1 Pro Max: the Pro Max is the better robot. The measured suction advantage is real, the larger battery helps, and the navigation hardware is genuinely more capable.

But neither robot changed my overall assessment of where cordless technology stands right now. In my testing across multiple units, cordless robots consistently fall short of corded alternatives on suction, filtration, and automation. The best PSI number in the entire Aiper Scuba X1 lineup — 1.3 PSI on the Pro Max — is still well below the 2.2 PSI I measured on the Dolphin Premier. And every day you own a cordless robot, you’re spending time on a recharging routine that corded robot owners don’t deal with at all.

If you want a robot that genuinely makes pool maintenance easier rather than just different, the corded alternatives at these price points outperform in every category that matters in my testing. That’s my assessment based on real testing data, and it’s the same conclusion I keep reaching every time I put a cordless robot in the water.
